Mining

Mine Minotari (XTM)

Minotari (XTM) is the Layer 1 token that secures the Tari network through proof of work. Anyone can mine it — no investor status, no airdrop farming, just raw hash power. This page explains how mining works and how to start.

What you earn

  • 100% of block rewards go to miners. There is no foundation cut.
  • Miners also collect Layer 1 transaction fees.
  • Rewards decline block-by-block via an exponential decay curve (roughly halving every three years), then settle into a perpetual 1% annual tail emission — so miners are compensated forever.
  • Total supply is capped at 21 billion XTM, emitted over ~27.8 years.

The four mining lanes

Tari splits network rewards evenly across four proof-of-work lanes — each targets 25% of block rewards. This keeps mining open to CPUs, GPUs, and ASICs alike:

LaneAlgorithmHardwareNotes
RandomX merge-mined (RxM)RandomXCPUMine Tari and Monero at the same time — no extra hardware load.
Tari-native RandomX (RxT)RandomXCPUStandalone CPU mining on Tari alone.
SHA3xSHA3xGPU / ASICHigher-hashrate lane for GPUs and dedicated ASICs.
Cuckaroo (C29)CuckarooGPUMemory-oriented lane, GPU-friendly.

Easiest way: Tari Universe

The simplest path for most people is the Tari Universe desktop app — a one-click miner for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install it, click Start Mining, and it joins RandomX merge-mining with Monero automatically. You can throttle CPU/GPU usage in its settings.

Solo/pool mining with your own rig

If you prefer to run your own miner against a pool, the reference tooling lives in the Tari GitHub repo:

  • XMRig — CPU miner for RandomX (merge-mine with Monero or mine Tari-native).
  • minotari_miner — standalone SHA3 miner, from github.com/tari-project/tari.
  • minotari_merge_mining_proxy — merge-mine Tari alongside Monero via XMRig.
  • SRBMiner — GPU miner; pass --algorithm sha3x for the SHA3x lane.

Pick a pool that lists the lane you want (RandomX vs SHA3x — pointing an ASIC at a RandomX pool yields nothing). Popular options include Kryptex, LuckyPool, and community pools such as nodejs-pool.

Quick start checklist

  1. Set up a Minotari (XTM) wallet to receive payouts — a Tari address, not a Bitcoin one.
  2. Choose your lane: CPU (RandomX) is the low-barrier default; GPU/ASIC for SHA3x.
  3. Install a miner (Tari Universe, XMRig, or SRBMiner) and point it at a pool for that lane.
  4. Enter your wallet address and a worker name, then start mining.
  5. Confirm your worker is on the right algorithm/lane — hybrid networks make mix-ups common.
