Tari vs Zcash
Both are privacy-focused Layer 1 blockchains, but they approach anonymity and scalability from very different technological and philosophical directions.
Pure currency, versus programmable platform
A pure privacy currency, versus a programmable digital asset platform
Tari and Zcash are both privacy-focused Layer 1 blockchains, but they approach the problem of anonymity and scalability from very different technological and philosophical directions. While Zcash is a pure privacy currency, Tari is designed as a programmable platform for digital assets.
1. High-level comparison
Different tech, different goals
Both are Proof of Work chains, but they diverge on privacy technology, programmability, and how the chain state scales over time.
| Feature | Tari | Zcash (ZEC) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary privacy tech | MimbleWimble | zk-SNARKs |
| Consensus | PoW (SHA-3X / RandomX) | PoW (Equihash) |
| Programmability | High (TariScript / Tapplets) | Limited (primarily a currency) |
| Chain state | Prunable (compact) | Full history (growing) |
| Primary goal | Privacy for creators and digital assets | Absolute anonymity for transactions |
| Trusted setup | Not required | Required (historically; Halo minimizes this) |
2. Privacy mechanisms
MimbleWimble vs. zk-SNARKs
This is the most significant technical difference between the two.
Tari: MimbleWimble
Zcash: zk-SNARKs
3. Utility and philosophy
A privacy coin, versus a privacy platform
One aims to be a fungible digital cash. The other aims to be a full creator economy.
Zcash: a privacy coin
Tari: a privacy platform
4. Performance and scalability
Lightweight nodes, CPU-friendly mining
Tari has a massive advantage here due to MimbleWimble’s pruning. Zcash’s ledger grows linearly and cannot be easily pruned without losing the ability to verify the chain. On hardware, Tari’s use of RandomX, the algorithm used by Monero, makes it highly CPU-friendly and resistant to ASIC centralization, whereas Zcash’s Equihash is more susceptible to specialized mining hardware.
Summary: which is which?
